So most of them will need to be transcoded by the NAS via Plex unless I'm going to laboriously convert them all first. When I watch them on say the Roku using Plex they do take quite a while to start playing compared to the DVD rips - and this is of course with them being transcoded by the quad core i7 (2.3Ghz) in the Mac mini. I was using an i7 2012 Mac Mini as my plex server and it did pretty well but it cannot output 4k to a display. I just ordered the base model Mini but upgraded the storage to 256GB so I am hoping it runs a bit better than the i7 2012. I skipped the 2014 models because they were for the most part slower than my 2012. Double Act – Like its predecessor the new Mac mini serves dual roles. In addition to its media server duties it is also our Plex client on our main AV system. Another nice little upgrade from our old setup is the new mini’s built in full size HDMI port with audio, meaning we no longer have to rig up a separate audio input into our amp (see the video below on how the old mini was rigged up. If you have players capable of direct play you do not need transcoding on the server. Also transcoding 4k HEVC files is not trivial, if a Mac has a modern GPU it should be able to use hardware encoder built into the GPU but on CPU alone I'm unsure of what old Mac Mini would be suitable, if no-one here can answer try the Plex server forums. So, what happens when the world starts upgrading Mac minis? It's slightly different from other technology refresh cycles for two main reasons: 1) The Mac minis from 2014 or even 2012 still run great! 2) The four-year gap since the last refresh means the new minis are way faster. This leaves us in a position where lots of people are upgrading minis, but the old minis still have a lot of life in them... so what to do?

So, I just started playing around with Plex Media Server. I really like it, but my WD EX4100 seems to struggle a bit. I decided to get a Apple Mac Mini MGEN2LL/A Desktop (2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB Hard Drive, Mac OS) to run as my media server. I wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations on setup. Is OS X server recommended? Any issues with using the EX4100 as the storage for the media? I have a Gigabit switch that everything will be attached to. Any advice you can give me would be great.
